Hope After Horror: Rescuing Kabul’s Tar Puppies

By the time our team could get to them late afternoon, the situation was critical. The tar was acting like concrete around the puppies. It was impossible to free them safely on-site without causing further injury, so our team had to make the decision to transport the puppies to our Animal Hospital, still encased in the ever-hardening tar.

Today, as Ukraine marks 35 years of independence, we stand with a nation whose strength continues to inspire us all. Since the war began in 2022, Nowzad has worked side by side with the incredible rescue teams, vets, and shelter volunteers who refuse to walk away from animals in danger. Through Operation Kramatorsk, more than 100 dogs and cats have been brought out of the worst of the fighting. War leaves its mark on everyone — and animals are no exception. These little faces have already been far too close to a world no puppy should ever know. They were brought to our partner shelter in Zaporizhzhia by Ukrainian soldiers, rescued from areas on or close to the front line. But puppies have a wonderful way of reminding us what hope looks like.
