Emergency Hay Appeal

Help Us
Horse Paradise has rescued horses abandoned by war and now provides life-changing equine therapy for veterans and their families. But with Ukraine facing a severe shortage of safe hay, these horses urgently need your help before winter arrives.

Our Goal

EMERGENCY

Keeping the Rescued Horses of Horse Paradise Ranch Safe This Winter

When the war in Ukraine tore through communities, it wasn't just families who lost everything. Hundreds of draft and equestrian horses were left abandoned, wandering near active trenches, and traumatised by the horrors of conflict.

Thankfully, the courageous team at Horse Paradise Rescue Sanctuary near Kyiv became their salvation — rehabilitating these beautiful animals and going on to provide much-needed equine therapy to serving veterans, frontline soldiers and their families.

Nowzad is incredibly proud to have partnered with this amazing rescue team. But right now, we are facing an immediate crisis, and we need your help to raise £20,000 to keep these resilient horses alive through the harsh winter ahead.

The Silent Crisis: Ukraine’s Dire Hay Shortage

Feeding a herd of rescued horses is hard enough, but the ongoing conflict has devastated Ukraine's agricultural sector. There is an acute, nationwide shortage of reliably safe quality forage.

Because of the extreme scarcity, earlier this year the ranch had no choice but to accept hay which turned out to be unsafe. Tragically, this lower-grade, uncertified forage made several of the horses extremely poorly.

We cannot risk this happening again. We must secure the safe, high-quality hay on which these horses depend.

Upfront Demands and Market Reality

The basic rules of supply and demand are hitting Ukraine's animal shelters hard. Short supply is driving prices sky-high all across the country, especially for the decent, safe forage these horses desperately need.

Worse still, because resources are so tight, local farmers are demanding full payment upfront to secure the hay needed to get through the coming winter.

You might wonder if we could simply import good quality hay from neighbouring countries. Sadly, the disrupted logistics and staggering transport costs make bringing hay in from outside Ukraine completely cost-ineffective. Every penny we spend on international shipping is a penny taken away from the direct care of these animals. Buying locally is the only viable option — but we have to be able to pay the  farmers now to secure much needed forage for the coming winter.

The Longer-Term Plan
(And the Immediate Need)

The medium/longer-term vision for Horse Paradise is sustainable and forward-thinking, with a plan to transition the sanctuary to a more horse-friendly, extensive grazing system (often called Equiculture). This encourages natural movement, protects the land, and will dramatically reduce the ranch's dependency on bought-in forage in the years to come.

But a more extensive, sustainable system cannot be built overnight in a conflict zone, and it won't keep the horses fed this winter.

Before we can build for their future, we have to save them in the present. We must help feed these horses through the bitter winter ahead.

Ayka’s Story

Discovered wandering near the active frontlines of the Donetsk region, Ayka was rescued in October 2024 after Ukrainian soldiers spotted her, and coordinated an urgent evacuation alongside partners Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK). Transported to the Horse Paradise Sanctuary in Kyiv with her fellow rescue horse “Liberty”, Ayka arrived bearing deep trauma, including a severe fetlock joint injury and neurological stress from shell shock. Through patient care, ongoing veterinary treatment, and a peaceful environment, Ayka has made a remarkable recovery, with her joint injuries now almost healed and her neurological head-shaking largely resolved. Today, she flourishes in the quiet security of the ranch, enjoying quiet routine far from the shelling she survived. As we launch our winter hay appeal, supporting Ayka ensures she, Liberty and all their equine companions continue to receive the peaceful home they so deeply deserve.
