An update from Pen - September 2016

Being part of the Nowzad charity has led me to know one thing for certain.. Our team of Afghan employees, UK & US Trustees and volunteers and the amazing Nowzad family of supporters just do not know the meaning of taking a break. There is always something happening whether at the sharp end in Afghanistan or back here in the UK/USA raising the vital funds the charity needs to keep making a difference. Thank you all for your dedication and determination to be the difference for an animal in Afghanistan.

Back here in the UK we have moved the UK office – the new address as of now please for all donations and mail correspondence is;

Nowzad, The Meriel Suite, Hartnoll Farm Business Park, Post Hill, Tiverton, EX164NG, England

This also means the old landline no longer works and so for now please use our Nowzad mobile number which is; 07583812091 or info@nowzad.com

For all of our North American supporters the US office is still;

Nowzad Dogs NFP, Box 348, 4408 N Rockwood Road, Peoria, Il, 61615, USA.

In this newsletter we have picked out just some of the many cases that we see each day including the amazing ‘Wonder and Serac’, a mum and her pup found by the team on the streets of Kabul in a drainage ditch hours before the winter rains arrived (and that is not actually the sadness part of this ‘tail’ but there is a happy ending thanks to our supporters!), then there is Sharif, a lonely older dog on death’s doorstep that found her way to the Nowzad clinic, Shahzada the abandoned donkey and the many cats that we see each day to be spayed and vaccinated against rabies.

Najwa joins the team as our new in-country manager and has already made a huge impact on the way we operate – during her first month she took on refurbishing our clinic with tiled flooring whilst expanding the surgical area! And Dr Tahera joins our vet team as our third female veterinarian bringing with her experience gained whilst working at Kabul zoo.

For myself and Hannah it is always a privilege to be able to travel to Afghanistan and experience the friendship and professionalism of our Afghan staff. They are working together to make a difference with your donations to improve the welfare of animals in Afghanistan and they are doing a fantastic job under extremely difficult circumstances. The threat of kidnap is at an all-time high, the Taliban and Isis are still very much a threat but every day our staff arrive at work enthused to make a difference.

I want to personally say thank you so much to Brandy and the team at Purina for their amazing donation of 200 bags of dog and 100 bags of cat food, (which created the nice to have problem of where do we store it all!!) and to Budd and Jack at the non-profit charity ‘Trust In Education’ in San Francisco who kindly arranged for the Purina donation to be shipped to Kabul along with their own supplies for the fantastic work they do in bringing educational resources to those children who desperately need it across Afghanistan. Our canine and feline residents are eating well for the next few months!

Can you believe that this year we will be celebrating 10 years since I first met Nowzad the dog? It was back on October 28th 2006 when I first stumbled across that dog fight back in Helmand Province. 10 years ago since myself and Nowzad the dog became best buddies in a remote forward operating base in what we called bandit country. What a legacy that docked eared dog has created!

So here is to the next 10 years! Please continue to support us – it really does make a difference. Watch our update video here
