A message from Pen Farthing
12 November 2024

A note from Pen, Nowzad founder.

This year has finally brought the closure I needed on the events surrounding August 2021 and the evacuation of Kabul. Just as I had almost given up hope of finding a publisher, the marvellous team at Claret Press gave me the opportunity to publish ‘Operation Ark’ in July of this year, both as a paperback and an audiobook.

It’s crazy how quickly a normal day on-site can turn into a life-saving mission. When roadwork began in Pul-e-Charkhi, Kabul, engineers made a discovery beneath the asphalt they were breaking up - 15 tiny puppies from four different litters, all huddled together inside holes under the road. Recognising the danger the pups were in, the engineers stopped their machinery and called our Nowzad animal hospital for help. By some miracle, not a single puppy was injured, though they had lost their m

❤️🐾✈️ Paws Across Borders This week brings truly fabulous news — Maggi is now fully funded. Thank you to every single one of you who donated to help her reach her goal! Amazing. These fundraisers are their flights to freedom. We wish we didn’t have to keep asking for help to get them home, but the reality is simple: without all of us pulling together, these happy endings wouldn’t happen. So thank you, deeply, for donating directly into their journeys. Rambo and Karty are still a long way f

Who remembers the pregnant cow we helped evacuate from the Kramatorsk frontlines in Ukraine a couple of weeks ago? We have the most wonderful news to share: she has officially given birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl! Both mum and her new little girl are doing remarkably well, soaking up the relative peace and safety at their new home north west of Dnipro - away from the immediate danger of Kramatorsk. Every life, big and small, matters. 🐾💙 Thank you to everyone whose support made

We are beyond thrilled to share the incredible conclusion to a fight for survival that started back in January this year. Working hand-in-hand with Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), the Nowzad team officially released 10 young macaques this week - back into the wild in Laghman Province, where they belong! After being rescued by NEPA and Nowzad from Nimroz Province in the east (some of you may remember our Facebook post and newsletter back then?) and then spending t

You might have spotted our brilliant Chief Veterinary Advisor, Dr. Lachlan Campbell, making international headlines recently. We’re all feeling very proud of him today, and his incredible efforts since 2022 to help the people and animals of Ukraine. And as Lach will be the first to tell you, behind every emergency surgery he performs, every stray he stabilises, and every animal he treats in eastern Ukraine, there is a machine working around the clock! It takes fuel to reach the conflict zones
