Beautiful Barhan was once a celebrated athlete. Bred in Ukraine for top-level competition, he spent his younger years training for show jumping under well-known Ukrainian riders, even earning international qualifications. One of his final major competitions was the Ukrainian National Show Jumping Championship held in Bakhchysarai, Crimea, before the occupation.
Tragically though, the war changed Barhan’s life completely. Following the de-occupation of his town on the Kharkiv-Donetsk border, his owner fell into depression and severe alcohol abuse, and could no longer care for him. For a while all Barhan had to eat was raw rice grains, making him extremely malnourished and sick.
Fearing he wouldn't survive another winter, the owner's ex-wife desperately pleaded for help to save him. By agreeing to rescue Barhan — when every other sanctuary had turned him down — Horse Paradise also gave the owner’s ex-wife the peace of mind to finally flee to safety with her three children. Our trusted friends at Animal Rescue Kharkiv helped transport Barhan first to Kharkiv, where the ranch team collected him with a horse trailer and brought him safely to Kyiv.
