The cover of this calendar shows Pen and Nowzad’s work over the past 20 years, from where our story first began, in Afghanistan 2027.  Fast forward 2 decades, though and the images inside show our work at the Nowzad Hospital and Maverick’s Donkey Sanctuary in Kabul over just the past year, capturing some of the animals, people and everyday moments that make our work there so special.

Every month shares a photograph and a few words about the moment behind it. Some will make you smile, some may pull at your heart, but each one is a reminder of the individual animals behind the numbers — and the people who refused to leave them behind.

Perhaps our favourite thing about this calendar is that these aren't polished photographs taken especially for its pages. They are moments that simply happened along the way. A cuddle before another 14-hour journey, a curious kitten exploring Pen’s route out of Kramatorsk, rescued puppies snuggled together at a shelter, and a quiet moment of trust between Pen and a dog on the frontline.

We hope that as you turn each page throughout 2027, these faces will remind you why Nowzad is there — and what kindness can mean to an animal caught in a war they never chose.
