Your Impact in Action: See the Amazing Recovery of Two Rescued Horses

Do you remember Beauty and Grace? Both rescued from the horrors of an Afghan brick kiln, these two arrived at Maverick’s Donkey Sanctuary in late summer 2025, very weak and wounded. Back then, they were so exhausted and quiet we couldn't even imagine their true characters.

But today it’s a completely different story! They are finally learning how to just be horses.

The vet team have been paying a lot of attention to their nutrition, with their daily menu including hay and barley, fresh alfalfa if they can source it, eggs mixed with bran for that extra protein boost, plus plenty of carrots and apples!

Both horses have developed incredible appetites, and, wow is it showing. Take a look at some of these recent photos to see the amazing difference from last summer, and enjoy Pen's late but very heartfelt Christmas message!

⚡Beauty has blossomed into a really energetic and powerful boy. While he’s become fast friends with the staff he sees every day, he still carries a bit of his past with him so he’s really quite protective of his personal space—especially his head and neck area. And he’s definitely not shy about letting new people know he needs distance! Dr Reshad and all are also continuing to treat a persistent injury on his left leg with regular bandaging to manage swelling and pain.

🌿 Grace remains our beautiful, calm soul. She’s enjoying her meals at last, too, which is so lovely to see and, while she’s a bit cautious with new people, has eased into her life of peace so well.

Seeing these two special horses move from the kilns to the safety of our sanctuary is a reminder of why we do what we do.

Thank you for making transformations like these happen.

Pen did a live interview with Emma Bullimore on BBC this morning about the work Nowzad are currently doing in Ukraine. Enroute more supply-loading at the warehouse, Liuba took Peter Egan and team to pay respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers. A very emotional morning and startling seeing the vast number of lives cut short by a senseless war. This isn't the end of it...there are many more graves for brave soldiers they've lost. #Ukraine #NoAnimalLeftBehind #CannonballRun #OperationKramatorsk

Another busy week ahead of vaccinating, neutering and spaying, as well as food and essential supply drops. As we race against time, we're joined by more members of the team as there's much work to be done. We think you may recognise one in particular! In the snapshot video, the team heckled their driver, as they experienced first hand, the pot-holed ride into Lviv, where our brilliant and beautiful Liuba got to meet someone very special to Nowzad. Over the next few days, we'll introduce our

Whilst Pen and Dan spent more hours on the road today, the rest of the Nowzad Ukraine team, David, Liuba, Dr Lachlan and Angela were hard at work organising and packing the van ready to head into Hostomel and Borodyanka Sunday morning. In addition to food supplies, there is also all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to set up a surgical clinic. The amount we need to take with us to set up a surgical clinic from nothing is massive! Everything from instruments to medications to means fo
