From the Streets of Kabul to a Forever Home: Help Sparky’s Wheels Reach the Finish Line

In the bustling, often unforgiving streets of Kabul, survival is a daily battle for the stray animals who call it home. For a small, spirited dog named Sparky, that battle almost ended in December 2024. Found by the Nowzad team after a devastating road accident, Sparky was completely paralysed from the waist down, his hind legs lifeless and his future uncertain.

The diagnosis was heartbreaking: a broken back and severe nerve damage. To give him a life free from pain, our veterinary team had to make the difficult decision to amputate both of his hind legs. It was a dark beginning, but Sparky had other plans.

A Spirit That Refuses to Sit Still

True to his name, Sparky has spent the last year proving that physical limitations cannot dampen a joyful soul. Through expert rehabilitation at the Nowzad Animal Hospital and the gift of his first set of wheels, he has transformed into a bundle of pure, infectious energy.

Whether he is zooming through the clinic or making friends in the Nowzad cat room, Sparky’s confidence is a testament to the resilience of the animals we serve. He isn't just a survivor; he is a character who has stolen the hearts of everyone he meets.

The Journey of a Lifetime

Now, Sparky is facing his biggest adventure yet. A wonderful forever family in the United States has fallen in love with him and is ready to give him the life he deserves. Imagine it: a massive garden with its own woodland to explore, daily runs along the beach, feeling the salt air on his face...

His new family has already prepared for his arrival with custom-built ramps and a brand-new set of wheels, ensuring Sparky can remain as independent and active as any other dog. In their own words: "We are so looking forward to meeting the little guy; he’s already stolen our hearts."

How You Can Help

Getting a special-needs dog across the world is a massive logistical mission. We need to raise the funds to cover Sparky’s travel and transport costs to ensure he makes it safely to his new front door.

We know that times are challenging for everyone, but any contribution, no matter how small, brings Sparky one mile closer to his woodland walks and beach runs. Let’s rally together to get this incredibly deserving dog to the finish line.

Thank you for your incredible kindness, compassion, and for believing that every life, no matter how small or "broken," is worth saving.

Pen did a live interview with Emma Bullimore on BBC this morning about the work Nowzad are currently doing in Ukraine. Enroute more supply-loading at the warehouse, Liuba took Peter Egan and team to pay respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers. A very emotional morning and startling seeing the vast number of lives cut short by a senseless war. This isn't the end of it...there are many more graves for brave soldiers they've lost. #Ukraine #NoAnimalLeftBehind #CannonballRun #OperationKramatorsk

Another busy week ahead of vaccinating, neutering and spaying, as well as food and essential supply drops. As we race against time, we're joined by more members of the team as there's much work to be done. We think you may recognise one in particular! In the snapshot video, the team heckled their driver, as they experienced first hand, the pot-holed ride into Lviv, where our brilliant and beautiful Liuba got to meet someone very special to Nowzad. Over the next few days, we'll introduce our

Whilst Pen and Dan spent more hours on the road today, the rest of the Nowzad Ukraine team, David, Liuba, Dr Lachlan and Angela were hard at work organising and packing the van ready to head into Hostomel and Borodyanka Sunday morning. In addition to food supplies, there is also all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to set up a surgical clinic. The amount we need to take with us to set up a surgical clinic from nothing is massive! Everything from instruments to medications to means fo
