Nowzad’s New Mobile Clinic Begins Its Transformation

The roar of power tools and the clatter of stripped metal now fill the workshop where Nowzad’s latest mission is taking shape. The charity has officially begun the "ultimate teardown" of a decommissioned ambulance, destined to become a high-tech mobile veterinary unit for the war-torn regions of Ukraine.

Dubbed the TNVRu (The Nowzad Veterinary Response Unit), this vehicle is currently shedding its former life to make way for a state-of-the-art surgical suite. The project is messy, loud, and physically demanding, but for the team on the ground, every bolt removed is a step closer to saving lives.

Built for the Toughest Conditions

The goal is clear: to create a mobile clinic capable of navigating the rugged, unpredictable terrain of a conflict zone. Once the refit is complete, the unit will provide:

  • Emergency Surgeries: Immediate care for animals injured in the crossfire.

  • Vital Vaccinations: Preventing the spread of disease in displaced populations.

  • TNVR Programs: Essential Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return services to manage the stray animal crisis exacerbated by the war.

The Road to Ukraine

The clock is ticking, with a planned deployment set for this April. The TNVRu will embark on a journey across Europe, with its sights firmly set on the Ukrainian border. For the thousands of animals caught in the middle of the ongoing conflict, this unit represents more than just a van; it is a literal lifeline.

"Turning a retired vehicle into a frontline veterinary unit takes more than just elbow grease. It takes a community."

While the physical work is well underway, the mission relies heavily on the generosity of supporters to fund the specialised medical equipment and logistical costs required to keep the unit operational in a combat zone.

How You Can Help: Nowzad is calling on its global community to support the final kit-out. Whether through a donation or simply by sharing Abi’s and the TNVRu’s stories, every bit of momentum helps.

On Tuesday the Nowzad team headed to work at the Hostomel shelter, a rural settlement in Kyiv Oblast, run by the lovely Maria. The area was heavily attacked since the war started, seeing the number of dogs rise to around 500 and approximately 200 cats. On the way, Peter and the rest of the team found it incredibly sad to pass scarred buildings and piles of rubble, no thanks to Russian missiles and drones - all in such close proximity to the shelter. Led by Dr Lachlan, more neutering and vacc

Pen did a live interview with Emma Bullimore on BBC this morning about the work Nowzad are currently doing in Ukraine. Enroute more supply-loading at the warehouse, Liuba took Peter Egan and team to pay respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers. A very emotional morning and startling seeing the vast number of lives cut short by a senseless war. This isn't the end of it...there are many more graves for brave soldiers they've lost. #Ukraine #NoAnimalLeftBehind #CannonballRun #OperationKramatorsk

Another busy week ahead of vaccinating, neutering and spaying, as well as food and essential supply drops. As we race against time, we're joined by more members of the team as there's much work to be done. We think you may recognise one in particular! In the snapshot video, the team heckled their driver, as they experienced first hand, the pot-holed ride into Lviv, where our brilliant and beautiful Liuba got to meet someone very special to Nowzad. Over the next few days, we'll introduce our
