Grace: an incredible soul who refused to give up

When our team found her at the end of last week, she was in an absolutely wretched state — completely collapsed from exhaustion at a brick kiln, with workers trying to force her to stand with slaps and kicks, so she could continue pulling her heavy load of bricks. But Grace was too weak to lift her head or even open her eyes.

We knew immediately, of course, we weren’t going to leave her behind. Our team made a firm stand, forming a protective ring around her until the truck arrived to take her to safety. After pleading with her owner, we were thankfully able to free Grace from this pitiful existence at the kiln and bring her to our new Maverick’s Donkey Sanctuary in Kabul.

Despite the deep wounds on her back and legs and severe malnutrition, Grace is making an amazing recovery already. She's healing, gaining strength, and learning to trust again. She also took an immediate shine to our other recent rescue, Beauty (remember him from a couple of weeks ago?!), and we hope they become firm friends soon.

Grace's story is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do and why we must keep on educating and lobbying for better care and treatment of these hard-working animals.

This Christmas, we've decided to launch a double sponsorship package for Grace and Beauty – two incredible and much-loved horses, but rescued from depressingly similar circumstances. You can help support their continued recovery and lifelong care as a little Christmas present to yourself or a loved one, perhaps.

But, if you'd like to support animals like Grace sooner than that - please consider sponsoring one of our animals already on the programme, or sharing Grace’s story today.

We say it a lot but, honestly, every single penny or drop-in conversation about Nowzad helps us continue our mission to save these graceful and very beautiful souls. ❤️

Whilst Pen and Dan spent more hours on the road today, the rest of the Nowzad Ukraine team, David, Liuba, Dr Lachlan and Angela were hard at work organising and packing the van ready to head into Hostomel and Borodyanka Sunday morning. In addition to food supplies, there is also all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to set up a surgical clinic. The amount we need to take with us to set up a surgical clinic from nothing is massive! Everything from instruments to medications to means fo

As part of Operation Kramatorsk, our incredible partner, Ksenia, has been on the ground very recently - visiting the “hidden” feline heroes of this frontline city. Here - there is a quiet, tireless army of women refusing to leave their four-legged family members behind. Ksenia recently visited Natalia – a volunteer who shares her tidy, bright flat with 70 cats. Most of these cat rescues were brought to her by soldiers from the front lines because they know Natalia’s door is always open. Despite

It’s been a whirlwind of a week here in Ukraine, with Operation Kramatorsk. We’ve had some incredible wins, like getting five more dogs out of Kramatorsk and safely to Kyiv yesterday —including sweet little Peter, who is now receiving the veterinary care he needs! Of course, the frontlines always throw challenges our way. Our ambulance has unfortunately broken down again, which is a tough setback for our team. But the work doesn’t stop! We’re still pushing forward with our veterinary work (neu

Yesterday was one of the long ones, but it was worth every second! Just look at the dogs as they come out of the crates after the journey, into their new home for now. Dan and Pen have just finished a VERY tough 12-hour drive to get 5 more dogs out of the danger zone in Kramatorsk and safely into the shelter in Kyiv. #nowzad #kramatorsk #operationkramatorsk #ukrainerelief #nowzaddogscharity

Today has been a total whirlwind of emotion, action, and hope. In the Field with Pen 🎥 Check out the video from Pen, who’s currently en route with a truckload of animals - one dog (‘Peter’) going straight to the vets in Kyiv this evening to hopefully resolve some worrying health issues. We’re moving as fast as we can to get these dogs to safety in Kyiv and away from the immediate dangers of the conflict. Every mile brings them closer to a new, peaceful life.
