Adopting Locally is Changing Hearts in Kabul!

We are thrilled to write about two recent local adoptions from our Animal Hospital in Kabul that prove a powerful truth: the capacity for love and care for animals is alive and well in Afghanistan! This is something to celebrate for Afghanistan, whose people have gone through so much.

Many people outside of the country assume that animals here are given little consideration. While it's true that formal education about animal respect and care is not taught in schools or consistently within families, we often find the opposite of indifference is true. The local Afghan people are inherently kind and quickly embrace the concept of responsible animal ownership when given the guidance.

Our greatest reward at Nowzad is breaking the cycle. By introducing local families — especially children, students, and young adults — to the pleasure of having a pet and being responsible for its care and upkeep, we are creating the most long-lasting and rewarding impact of all. This work is what we're particularly proud of!

Simba's Story

Simba was one of four tiny, vulnerable kittens who grew strong and healthy under the medical care and love at our hospital over the summer. She was adopted last month by Mr. Elias, who we know particularly loves cats, and he gave her a safe, forever home and a very fitting new name.

Lili’s Story

This sweet kitten came to us after sadly facing mistreatment from children in her neighbourhood — a heartbreaking example of not knowing how to treat animals kindly. We took Lili into our hospital, but she wasn’t there for long! Hamid, who had been looking for a cat for his home, spotted her at our hospital and offered to adopt her immediately – love at first sight!

By adopting locally, these Afghans are helping us build a more compassionate future, one family and one animal at a time.

Thank you to the incredible local community for opening your hearts and homes!

Whilst Pen and Dan spent more hours on the road today, the rest of the Nowzad Ukraine team, David, Liuba, Dr Lachlan and Angela were hard at work organising and packing the van ready to head into Hostomel and Borodyanka Sunday morning. In addition to food supplies, there is also all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to set up a surgical clinic. The amount we need to take with us to set up a surgical clinic from nothing is massive! Everything from instruments to medications to means fo

As part of Operation Kramatorsk, our incredible partner, Ksenia, has been on the ground very recently - visiting the “hidden” feline heroes of this frontline city. Here - there is a quiet, tireless army of women refusing to leave their four-legged family members behind. Ksenia recently visited Natalia – a volunteer who shares her tidy, bright flat with 70 cats. Most of these cat rescues were brought to her by soldiers from the front lines because they know Natalia’s door is always open. Despite

It’s been a whirlwind of a week here in Ukraine, with Operation Kramatorsk. We’ve had some incredible wins, like getting five more dogs out of Kramatorsk and safely to Kyiv yesterday —including sweet little Peter, who is now receiving the veterinary care he needs! Of course, the frontlines always throw challenges our way. Our ambulance has unfortunately broken down again, which is a tough setback for our team. But the work doesn’t stop! We’re still pushing forward with our veterinary work (neu

Yesterday was one of the long ones, but it was worth every second! Just look at the dogs as they come out of the crates after the journey, into their new home for now. Dan and Pen have just finished a VERY tough 12-hour drive to get 5 more dogs out of the danger zone in Kramatorsk and safely into the shelter in Kyiv. #nowzad #kramatorsk #operationkramatorsk #ukrainerelief #nowzaddogscharity

Today has been a total whirlwind of emotion, action, and hope. In the Field with Pen 🎥 Check out the video from Pen, who’s currently en route with a truckload of animals - one dog (‘Peter’) going straight to the vets in Kyiv this evening to hopefully resolve some worrying health issues. We’re moving as fast as we can to get these dogs to safety in Kyiv and away from the immediate dangers of the conflict. Every mile brings them closer to a new, peaceful life.
