A message from Pen Farthing

A note from Pen, Nowzad founder.

This year has finally brought the closure I needed on the events surrounding August 2021 and the evacuation of Kabul. Just as I had almost given up hope of finding a publisher, the marvellous team at Claret Press gave me the opportunity to publish ‘Operation Ark’ in July of this year, both as a paperback and an audiobook.

Writing the true story of those two weeks and the subsequent details of the horrendous smear campaign led by the government of the day, and supported by elements of the press was therapy. Much needed therapy.

The book was written as much for you, the amazing people who supported Operation Ark as it was for me to get it out of my system.

If you have yet to order a copy, the opportunity to do so presents itself ready for those Christmas stockings that need to be filled! You can order a copy here.

Our charity work has shown no signs of slowing with the Nowzad team in Afghanistan now operating the country’s first designated 24-hour animal hospital. It is never short of animals needing treatment and care, and our mobile clinic is constantly in demand for the working donkeys and horses overworked and severely neglected toiling daily around the brick kilns of Kabul. Our team worked relentlessly on World Animal Day - click here to read more about such a positive day!

Nowzad’s volunteer teams across Ukraine are working extremely hard to provide food and shelter to dogs and cats in desperate need, whilst also in some areas, providing rabies vaccinations and even neutering and spaying services to humanely control the stray population. Right now rabies is a huge threat that needs to be addressed before it sweeps across the country. You can read more about our animal welfare role in Ukraine by clicking here.

The vital work of Nowzad is only possible because of your generous and caring support.

Making a purchase this festive season from the Nowzad online store will make a vital difference for an animal in need. We are super excited with the bumper crop of items available this year to support our essential animal welfare work! Please click here to make that difference!

Thank you for being there and I do hope you have a peaceful festive season!

As part of Operation Kramatorsk, our incredible partner, Ksenia, has been on the ground very recently - visiting the “hidden” feline heroes of this frontline city. Here - there is a quiet, tireless army of women refusing to leave their four-legged family members behind. Ksenia recently visited Natalia – a volunteer who shares her tidy, bright flat with 70 cats. Most of these cat rescues were brought to her by soldiers from the front lines because they know Natalia’s door is always open. Despite

It’s been a whirlwind of a week here in Ukraine, with Operation Kramatorsk. We’ve had some incredible wins, like getting five more dogs out of Kramatorsk and safely to Kyiv yesterday —including sweet little Peter, who is now receiving the veterinary care he needs! Of course, the frontlines always throw challenges our way. Our ambulance has unfortunately broken down again, which is a tough setback for our team. But the work doesn’t stop! We’re still pushing forward with our veterinary work (neu

Yesterday was one of the long ones, but it was worth every second! Just look at the dogs as they come out of the crates after the journey, into their new home for now. Dan and Pen have just finished a VERY tough 12-hour drive to get 5 more dogs out of the danger zone in Kramatorsk and safely into the shelter in Kyiv. #nowzad #kramatorsk #operationkramatorsk #ukrainerelief #nowzaddogscharity

Today has been a total whirlwind of emotion, action, and hope. In the Field with Pen 🎥 Check out the video from Pen, who’s currently en route with a truckload of animals - one dog (‘Peter’) going straight to the vets in Kyiv this evening to hopefully resolve some worrying health issues. We’re moving as fast as we can to get these dogs to safety in Kyiv and away from the immediate dangers of the conflict. Every mile brings them closer to a new, peaceful life. Morning everybody out there! Pen and Dan have just arrived back at the shelter in Kramatorsk. But the situation feels even more critical this morning. Last night, Pen witnessed the devastating impact of the conflict, counting at least 13 Shahid drone strikes in the area. The destruction and pain caused to everyday Ukrainian people and their animals just seems relentless. 💔 But we aren’t just watching; we’re acting! Pen and Dan are currently building crates to evacuate 5 more dogs today, movin
