Nowzad’s Beauty and Grace were both rescued from the brutal, demanding conditions of the local brick kilns in Afghanistan, where working animals are often pushed beyond their physical limits. Their plights underscore the devastating reality of the horse trade in the region.

Beauty was found struggling, still forced to pull a heavy, brick-laden cart despite suffering from serious issues with his front legs. His injuries and poor condition were a direct result of his past, after his import into Afghanistan from either neighbouring Iran or Pakistan — a brutal trade involving long journeys, minimal care, and cramming animals into unsuitable vehicles. We negotiated with his owner, who thankfully agreed, to take him to ‘Maverick’s Sanctuary’ as a matter of urgency, primarily due to Beauty’s declining health and working ability.

Grace’s rescue came just weeks later under equally heartbreaking circumstances. We found her collapsed from exhaustion, unable to even lift her head, and surrounded by people attempting to force her to stand with slaps and kicks. She had been working for long hours with virtually no rest. After a tense negotiation with the owner, we were able to bring Grace to lifelong safety at 'Maverick's Sanctuary'.
