Before she came to Nowzad, Echo was part of a group of nine baby macaques sadly being illegally transported across provinces in Afghanistan. Stripped from her natural habitat at just a few months old, her future looked uncertain until she was fortunately rescued in January 2026 by Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). Recognising that the young animals needed urgent medical care and rehabilitation, the authorities transferred the entire group directly to the Nowzad Animal Hospital in Kabul.
For months, our dedicated veterinary team provided Echo and her companions with round-the-clock care, proper nutrition, and a safe, peaceful environment. Once the young macaques were healthy, strong, and ready to return to the wild, our team began making preparations for their release.
But early on in their rehabilitation process, we had discovered that Echo was almost completely blind — a disability that would have made survival in the wild nearly impossible for her.
While her eight companions were successfully returned to their natural habitat in July 2026, our team decided that Echo’s long-term welfare, safety, and happiness lay in giving her a permanent, loving home in our care, at our 24-7 Animal Hospital.
When she first arrived, Echo was understandably nervous and frightened of human contact. But with patient, gentle handling from our hospital staff, she has blossomed into a remarkably calm, sweet, and endearing young animal. Although she cannot see well, Echo uses her amazing sense of hearing and smell to recognise her favourite caregivers and navigate her surroundings with ease — even enjoying exploring out and about in her custom little harness!
