Dutch is a horse whose strength is matched only by his quiet endurance. For years, Dutch was subjected to gruelling labour despite a significant physical disadvantage: he is blind in one eye.

In many environments, this would be seen as a reason for rest, but Dutch was pushed to work until he reached a state of extreme physical exhaustion. When our team first encountered him, he was dangerously weak. Securing his freedom wasn't easy; his previous owner was initially reluctant to let him go. However, we knew Dutch couldn't survive much longer under such harsh conditions.

After persistent negotiation from the Nowzad team, we finally secured his release and brought him home to the sanctuary.

Living at our shelter, Dutch is surrounded by a team that understands his needs. We provide a calm, predictable environment that helps him navigate safely with his limited vision. Dutch currently shares a stable with our other blind resident – April.
