Arthur arrived at our sanctuary gates in November 2025 carrying the heavy physical toll of a life of work. He was suffering from a dislocated shoulder in his right front leg — a painful and debilitating injury likely caused by years of overwork or specific trauma.

After his arrival, Arthur was immediately placed under expert veterinary care. His recovery required a delicate balance of medical treatment and, most importantly, total rest — something he had likely never experienced before.

While he was recovering, this brave boy was known simply as No Name — but we knew he deserved so much more. We turned to our supporters to help us choose a name that would mark the start of his new life.

Derived from Celtic origins meaning "Noble" the name Arthur perfectly embodies everything this donkey is about. It reflects the quiet, stoic strength he showed during his treatment and the inherent dignity he maintains despite his injury.

With time, patience, and dedicated monitoring, Arthur’s condition has shown incredible improvement. However, a dislocated shoulder is a sensitive injury; the risk of re-injury remains high, and he can never again return to the world of heavy labour.

Today, Arthur lives peacefully within the sanctuary, retiring into a safe and calm environment surrounded by love and care.
