Two Beautiful Horses from Maverick's Sanctuary in Kabul Await Sponsorship

The challenges faced by working animals in Afghanistan are immense, with horses frequently subjected to relentless conditions in demanding environments. Two horses, Beauty and Grace, were recently rescued by Nowzad from the local brick kilns, where animals are often pushed far beyond their physical limits. Both now reside safely at Maverick’s Sanctuary, beginning their journey toward a peaceful future.

From Suffering to Safety

Beauty’s rescue came just in time. He was found struggling to pull a cart overloaded with bricks, his front legs badly injured from years of relentless work. Many horses in this trade are imported from neighbouring countries such as Iran and Pakistan, often transported in poor conditions with little or no care.

When Beauty’s health began to fail, the Nowzad team acted quickly. After a careful negotiation with his owner, he was brought to the sanctuary for urgent treatment and rest.

Just a few weeks later, Grace was found in equally heartbreaking circumstances, collapsed from exhaustion and being roughly handled in an attempt to force her back to work. After patient negotiation, the team was able to secure her release. Grace was immediately taken to safety, where she could finally begin to heal.

Finding Peace and Friendship

Despite everything they’ve endured, Beauty and Grace have shown nothing but gentleness and trust. Beauty is a calm, affectionate soul who quickly bonded with his carers. Grace, too, is kind and gentle, often seen standing close to Beauty or caring for others, especially Tallulah, the sanctuary’s young horse, whom she’s taken under her wing like a protective mother.

Both are thriving on a healthy diet and a steady supply of love, plus their favourite treats, apples and carrots! Beauty enjoys his hay, barley, and fresh green grass, while Grace tucks into her bran and barley with great enthusiasm.

The Road to Recovery

Under continuous veterinary care, Beauty and Grace are slowly regaining their strength.

Beauty’s leg injuries are healing well, and he’s finally free from the pain that once made every step a struggle. Grace still requires plenty of rest, but her deep wounds, once covering her back, legs, face, and shoulders, are improving beautifully. She’s now able to stand and walk more steadily, a powerful sign of her resilience and spirit.

The Nowzad team remains devoted to ensuring both horses live out their days in comfort and safety, surrounded by kindness instead of hardship.

How You Can Help

Pen did a live interview with Emma Bullimore on BBC this morning about the work Nowzad are currently doing in Ukraine. Enroute more supply-loading at the warehouse, Liuba took Peter Egan and team to pay respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers. A very emotional morning and startling seeing the vast number of lives cut short by a senseless war. This isn't the end of it...there are many more graves for brave soldiers they've lost. #Ukraine #NoAnimalLeftBehind #CannonballRun #OperationKramatorsk

Another busy week ahead of vaccinating, neutering and spaying, as well as food and essential supply drops. As we race against time, we're joined by more members of the team as there's much work to be done. We think you may recognise one in particular! In the snapshot video, the team heckled their driver, as they experienced first hand, the pot-holed ride into Lviv, where our brilliant and beautiful Liuba got to meet someone very special to Nowzad. Over the next few days, we'll introduce our

Whilst Pen and Dan spent more hours on the road today, the rest of the Nowzad Ukraine team, David, Liuba, Dr Lachlan and Angela were hard at work organising and packing the van ready to head into Hostomel and Borodyanka Sunday morning. In addition to food supplies, there is also all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to set up a surgical clinic. The amount we need to take with us to set up a surgical clinic from nothing is massive! Everything from instruments to medications to means fo
