Pen at Ilminster Lit Fest 31st May

Pen will be presenting the Operation Ark talk at the Illminster Literary Festival on the 31st May.

Operation Ark is the powerful true story of the most controversial figure from the 2021 Afghanistan Evacuation, whose story captured global headlines.

As a Royal Marine Commando on tour in Afghanistan, Pen founded the animal welfare charity Nowzad working closely with coalition forces and the local community to provide lifesaving animal welfare, rabies prevention, and education for female vets. His work was award winning.

Circumstances changed with the 2021 withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Pen had to steer his charity staff and animals through the dangers of a Taliban takeover and a political storm back home. In the melee, he somehow became a villain, putting the lives of others at risk, when he was really doing something decent against all odds. Find out why that happened in this fascinating talk. Pen is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller, One Dog at A Time.

Today marks a milestone in the life of the Nowzad charity… we have turned 18! Our charity was created after the rescue of a docked eared former fighting dog called Nowzad back in 2007. None of us back then really knew what was to come and what Nowzad’s legacy would create but here we are, an internationally recognised charity operating in Afghanistan and Ukraine. And whether you have been with us for all of those definitely action packed, eventful (understatement!!!) and at times very hard going

Happy World Donkey Day 2025! Today, we’re highlighting the incredible work of #Nowzad’s Vet Team and our vital Working Animal Programme in Kabul, Afghanistan. Did you know that working donkeys and horses are the lifeblood of many communities there? Especially in the mountainous regions where they tirelessly carry essential supplies like water, food, and building materials – it is a hard life for them all. Our founder @penfarthing

Imagine finding an animal utterly resigned to its fate. That’s what Nowzad’s Chief Vet Dr Reshad faced with ‘Maverick’ in February, amidst the rubble of one of Afghanistan’s notoriously bleak brick kilns. Numbers vary but there are around 600 kilns across Kabul alone, where horses are often worked to death. [💔] Totally emaciated and covered with wounds, Maverick has spent many weeks since under the intensive care of our vets, being hoisted up on to his feet every day and slowly regaining his
