Nowzad Charity Statement on Charity Commission’s "Operation Ark" Report

Nowzad confirms that the Charity Commission announced today that Nowzad acted properly and transparently during its “Operation Ark” rescue mission in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2021.

“We are pleased that the Commission’s findings, similar to the recent report by the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, has absolved Nowzad of any regulatory infractions while highlighting the fact that we fully complied with charity law and protocols and acted transparently,” says Pen Farthing, founder of Nowzad Charity. “We are optimistic that our successful effort to evacuate more than 60 of our Afghan staff members and over 160 shelter animals will no longer be diminished by political distractions, but rightly celebrated.”

The Commission said it initiated a compliance case in 2021 to determine if Nowzad’s actions and Operation Ark were within the charity’s purposes and complied with charity law.

The Commission said it did not “identify any regulatory concerns about Operation Ark” and that the mission “did fall within the charity’s purposes.”

The Commission also concluded “the objectives of the operation were made clear to donors during fundraising, that trustees’ decision-making and actions during that time were reasonable, and that consequently it was valid to spend funds raised for Operation Ark on the evacuation of animals and staff from Afghanistan.”

During its Operation Ark mission, Nowzad facilitated the safe evacuation from Kabul to the UK of 67 staff members and their immediate family along with 68 cats and 94 dogs.

“Nowzad’s trustees are extremely pleased with the Commission’s findings and we appreciate their constructive engagement with our team,” said Nowzad Trustee Dan Tatsch.

“We are also grateful for the steadfast support and commitment we received from our donors and allies during this time.  We look forward to closing this chapter and resuming our focus and energy on helping Nowzad carry out its important animal-welfare mission.”

As part of Operation Kramatorsk, our incredible partner, Ksenia, has been on the ground very recently - visiting the “hidden” feline heroes of this frontline city. Here - there is a quiet, tireless army of women refusing to leave their four-legged family members behind. Ksenia recently visited Natalia – a volunteer who shares her tidy, bright flat with 70 cats. Most of these cat rescues were brought to her by soldiers from the front lines because they know Natalia’s door is always open. Despite

It’s been a whirlwind of a week here in Ukraine, with Operation Kramatorsk. We’ve had some incredible wins, like getting five more dogs out of Kramatorsk and safely to Kyiv yesterday —including sweet little Peter, who is now receiving the veterinary care he needs! Of course, the frontlines always throw challenges our way. Our ambulance has unfortunately broken down again, which is a tough setback for our team. But the work doesn’t stop! We’re still pushing forward with our veterinary work (neu

Today has been a total whirlwind of emotion, action, and hope. In the Field with Pen 🎥 Check out the video from Pen, who’s currently en route with a truckload of animals - one dog (‘Peter’) going straight to the vets in Kyiv this evening to hopefully resolve some worrying health issues. We’re moving as fast as we can to get these dogs to safety in Kyiv and away from the immediate dangers of the conflict. Every mile brings them closer to a new, peaceful life. Morning everybody out there! Pen and Dan have just arrived back at the shelter in Kramatorsk. But the situation feels even more critical this morning. Last night, Pen witnessed the devastating impact of the conflict, counting at least 13 Shahid drone strikes in the area. The destruction and pain caused to everyday Ukrainian people and their animals just seems relentless. 💔 But we aren’t just watching; we’re acting! Pen and Dan are currently building crates to evacuate 5 more dogs today, movin
