There are moments in rescue work when you look at an animal and realise they are down to their final few days. That was exactly the situation last month at the brick kilns when our team found two horses who had simply nothing left to give. They were hollowed out by malnutrition and extreme labour, with broken spirits. We knew with absolute certainty that they wouldn't have survived another day of work.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Ricky Gervais from his most recent comedy tour - Mortality - we were able to step in and change their destiny. To take them away from being simply a "work force" to a life of rest and peace, we had to provide their owner with the necessary compensation to release them.
It felt only right to name these two survivors after our absolutely fabulous Patrons Ricky and Peter - a tribute to Ricky’s transformative donation in December, and to Peter Egan's unwavering support of everything we do at Nowzad.
The journey to our Equine Sanctuary near Kabul was harrowing, and for a while, it truly was touch-and-go. Seeing them so weak and traumatised was heartbreaking. But looking at their "before" photos compared to what we see today, it’s hard to believe they are the same animals.
We see this rescue as a living legacy of the compassion Ricky and Peter show the world of animal welfare. The funds will ensure that Ricky and Peter have everything they need with Nowzad for the rest of their natural lives.
They are finally home, and they are finally loved.
