Animal welfare charity Nowzad is bringing its film about rescuing animals in war-torn Ukraine to Salisbury next month.
Founded by former Royal Marines commando Pen Farthing, the Devon-based charity has spent nearly 20 years helping animals in conflict zones. Nowzad is best known for its work in Afghanistan but has also helped animals affected by the war in Ukraine since 2022.
Mr Farthing said: "Nowzad are supporting the incredibly brave people and shelter organisations who have stayed behind at great personal risk, in order to care for the animals.
"I am so grateful to my friend (and patron) Peter Egan, and director Andrew for their selfless leaps of faith to accompany us amidst such devastation and destruction.
"This is a moving film for sure, but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the message you’ll take away, and inspired by the Ukranian people’s unwavering determination to hold on to hope and come through this."
Nowzad will screen its new documentary, Unbreakable, at The Woods at Oakley in Dinton, near Salisbury, on October 3.The 45-minute film, made by Andrew Telling of Orange Planet Pictures, follows a recent mission to Ukraine involving charity patron and actor Peter Egan.
Mr Egan said: "Making this film was both devastating and inspiring. Devastating to witness the human cost this war has brought upon Ukraine, and inspiring to see the extraordinary commitment of Ukraine to determine its own future.
"In the midst of this horror you have charities like Nowzad doing everything they can to ease the burden on humans and animals. Inspiring work by inspiring people."
Guests can enjoy drinks, canapés and popcorn from 5.30pm before the screening starts at 7pm.
A question-and-answer session with Pen Farthing, Peter Egan and Andrew Telling will follow. A representative from Nowzad’s Ukrainian partner sanctuary, Horse Paradise, will also discuss efforts to help animals affected by the conflict.
Since expanding into Ukraine in 2022, Nowzad has moved pets from frontline areas to safety. It also supports stray dogs and cats through trap, neuter, vaccinate and return schemes, as well as anti-rabies programmes.
The Salisbury screening is part of a wider tour, with further showings at Clapham Picturehouse in London on October 9 and Exeter Picturehouse in Devon on October 10.
