Life has transformed beautifully for our newest residents at the Nowzad sanctuary in Kabul - Dutch, Crush, and Arthur. Their biggest daily dilemma these days? Deciding which mouthful of delicious, crunchy corn plants to munch on next!
Settling In and Living Large
Each of these resilient boys is discovering what true comfort feels like. After years of navigating the chaotic brick kilns with vision in only one eye, Dutch has adapted to sanctuary life with incredible grace. He seems to have memorised the layout of his stable area and the shared paddock perfectly. In fact, he’s become quite the expert at tracking down where the caretakers drop the fresh corn stalks, using his sharp sense of hearing to follow the crisp crunch-crunch of his neighbours!
While Crush arrived broken and exhausted last winter too, his recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. These days, he uses his strength for much happier tasks, like hoarding the best pieces of corn plant from under the nose of our notoriously bossy goat Jaja!
And our sweet Arthur joined us with a heartbreakingly painful dislocated shoulder. Thanks to our vet team’s expert care his healing has been remarkable as well. As many of you know, his name was chosen by a popular vote among our wonderful supporters, and he is absolutely living up to it. With his head held high and a new pain-free stride, he rules his peaceful patch of the sanctuary like a truly gentle King Arthur.
Part of the Family
Dutch, Crush, and Arthur are now happily integrated into our Donkey Sanctuary family, which currently provides a safe haven for 21 animals, including our resident horses, donkeys, and a very bossy goat ,who keeps everyone in line!
Thank you for supporting the lifelong care of these wonderful animals. Later in the summer, keep an eye out for photos of them all enjoying delicious summer treats like hanging watermelons and giant fruit ice pops!
