Nowzad Launches Major Veterinary Aid Campaign for Ukrainian Stray Animals on World Stray Animals Day 2025

In a bid to alleviate the suffering of stray animals in war-torn Ukraine, Nowzad is launching a large veterinary aid campaign focused on the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, southern Ukraine. Commencing tomorrow - World Stray Animals Day, 2025 - the initiative aims to address the critical needs of animals in two particular regions of Ukraine heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Many animal shelters in these areas have been left without funding, as donor attention and resources are increasingly directed towards the eastern frontlines. This funding disparity has created a dire situation for the countless stray and abandoned animals on the streets elsewhere, struggling to survive.

Nowzad has teamed up with local animal welfare organisation Dog & Duck, based in Kyiv, who earlier this year told us of a "tremendous need" for vaccination, anti-parasite treatment, and humane population control in Kherson and throughout Mykolaiv - both areas situated perilously close to the active war zone.

Kherson borders Crimea and is overwhelmed with displaced animals whilst rabies outbreaks become increasingly common, exacerbating the already strained resources.

Fortunately, Nowzad has secured the assistance of two skilled vet teams in both areas, capable of performing at least 25 sterilisations and vaccinations per day, alongside other vital procedures. World Stray Animal Day on Friday is launch day.

We are hoping this mission goes some way to ensuring the neglected animals of Mykolaiv and Kherson receive the life-saving care they so desperately need so please check back with us in a few week’s time to see how the work is going. World Stray Animals Day is a poignant reminder each year of the millions of animals worldwide struggling for survival without the security of a home or any comfort. For us, it’s also a day to extend support for animals in Ukraine, so many of which were once someone’s loved pet but were abandoned when the country went to war.

Your support is the difference - please donate TODAY by clicking here, thank you.

Did you know that working donkeys and horses are the lifeblood of many communities there? Imagine finding an animal utterly resigned to its fate. That’s what Nowzad’s Chief Vet Dr Reshad faced with ‘Maverick’ in February, amidst the rubble of one of Afghanistan’s notoriously bleak brick kilns. Numbers vary but there are around 600 kilns across Kabul alone, where horses are often worked to death. [💔] Totally emaciated and covered with wounds, Maverick has spent many weeks since under the intensive care of our vets, being hoisted up on to his feet every day and slowly regaining his

World Stray Animal Day in Kabul - A blind stray #cat rescued from the perilous streets and brought to Nowzad for urgent medical care, faced a life in pain and without sight. A severe eye infection seems to have ruptured both eyes, plunging the poor girl into complete darkness. To alleviate her pain and restore some semblance of normalcy, the veterinary team performed a delicate surgical procedure on Friday and removed both eyes. Despite profound challenges, this brave cat has adapted remarkably

We are so pleased to report that our young foal, rescued by the team from a brutal dog attack in Kabul last November, is recovering amazingly well at Nowzad’s Donkey Sanctuary. Discovered by Dr. Reshad, the foal, initially named “No Ears” by @penfarthing due to the loss of her ears during the attack, suffered severe injuries and was found unable to stand after her tethering rope had gotten caught all around her legs. She was going to
