Snowdon Challenge 2020

Snowdon Challenge 2020 Snowdon Challenge 2020

It's BACK!! The 2020 Snowdon Challenge.
Trekking to the summit of Mount Snowdon in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales on the 03rd October 2020 and at a height of 1085m it is no ‘walk in the park’ (excuse the pun). But a serious undertaking as the weather, personal fitness and mountain environment are all serious factors to be considered!

Why trek to the summit?

Well for a start there is, (subject to Welsh weather), normally a glorious view and of course the world famous Snowdon café. The Snowdon light railway goes to the summit too - but that would be cheating!! This event is all about challenging ourselves and raising money for the work of Nowzad in Afghanistan. What better way to raise money than digging deep and pushing yourself to reach the top? (But please do save some energy so you can get back down!).

So what is the plan?

Friday 2nd October: For those who can make it we will all meet for a pre-trek ‘drink’ in Tyn Y Coed near Capel Curig around 7pm; (our base for the duration of the weekend) to get to meet other members of the group, hand out exclusive ‘Nowzad Snowdon challenge’ Tee shirts and discuss any last minute changes to the plan. Please visit the Betws Y Coed tourist office for details of accommodation available on the Snowdon Challenge weekend.

Saturday 3rd October: 8.30am we will meet at the layby next to the Tyn Y Coed pub to sort out shuttles. (You are required to pay for parking along most laybys in Snowdonia – bring plenty of one pound coins!). We will be supplying a mini-bus to help with shuttles but we are not all able to fit in it at once, so please do let us know if you are willing car share.

This year we will be starting on the PYG track before cutting over to a steep mountain path to join the Watkins path and the final summit push to arrive on the west side of the Snowdon peak. After celebrations all round we will be taking the PYG path all the way back to Pen Y Pass.

You should plan on being able to trek over a distance of five miles with a steep height gain of 800m before sharply descending to the finish point at the Pen Y Pass Youth hostel. We expect we will be trekking for around 8 hours or so.

Saturday 3rd October evening: Retire to Tyn Y Coed to bask in the glow of a successful summit bid to enjoy a few pints, a hearty meal and listen to an update on the work of Nowzad in Afghanistan and a talk by our good friends from Animals Asia about their mission to rescue bears in Asia, before the now world famous Snowdon quiz night begins!

Safety on the mountain:

You will not be on your own at any time! The organiser ‘Pen’ is an extremely experienced and qualified mountaineering instructor and he is extremely grateful to The AdventureFitness Company for supporting us with experienced mountaineering instructors, who have given up their time to accompany us during this event, to ensure you have a safe and very enjoyable weekend!

So what equipment do I need?

The summit of Snowdon can be a very remote and hostile environment should the weather turn for the worse. You must come prepared for the mountains. The following is a MUST.

Decent waterproof jacket and trousers (not a pac-a-mac!), lightweight walking trousers or leggings and top, walking fleece, (spare thick fleece for emergencies or breaks), decent warm hat and gloves, thick walking socks (plus spare pair) and of course decent walking boots that have been broken in during your training walks!! Flask of hot tea / coffee, bottled water, snacks and a hearty packed lunch. There is a café at the summit but it is expensive and not a certain it will be open! You will also need a fully charged mobile phone (waterproofed). If you need to buy new equipment and are unsure of the suitability, then please email here with the link for the product for some sound mountain advice in return!

You may bring your dog BUT they must be able to walk the distance, have their own food/ water carried for them and have access to a dog coat or towel should the weather turn nasty. We have known -10C on top of Snowdon in JUNE!!!!!

So what do I have to do to take part?

Please email us TODAY here for a registration form and along with your registration fee of just £20 commit to raising at least £200 in sponsorship; either via the old fashioned way of paper sponsor forms or via Just Giving and social media. Please use the #NowzadSnowdon on everything you post! And then of course you have to get some training miles in…!!
We look forward to seeing you in October. Further details of the event will be sent out during May for those have registered.
