The episode was called Pen and the Dogs of War and details the story of Sebastian Fluieras, a U.S. soldier deployed in Afghanistan, finds a litter of six puppies and wants to rescue them – but it’s against military rules for him to care for them on the base. Sebastian turns to British Royal Marine Pen Farthing and his girlfriend Hannah Surowinski for help. Pen and Hannah run Nowzad, Afghanistan’s first and only official animal sanctuary which houses over 150 animals rescued from the streets of Kabul. Pen and Hannah’s goal is to rescue and transport the puppies from Afghanistan to Texas, where they’ll be reunited with the U.S. soldier who saved them.
The program goes behind the scenes at Nowzad and allows the viewer to meet our amazing and dedicated Afghan team as they make sure the puppies are cared for from the moment they arrive at the Nowzad clinic.
In preparation for the episode the Nowzad team were busy promoting the episode, Pen was joined by Sarah and Wlylie the dog (who won Scruffts in 2014!) on the BBC Breakfast sofa to talk about the episode (which you can watch here - just how chilled out is Wylie as he takes being in the television studio in his stride!) and remember you can read Wylie's amazing 'tail' of his joureny from the streets of Afghanistan to winning Scruffts 2014 by buying the book here
Hannah was interviewed with Tali, one of the original Nowzad dogs rescued in 2006, on BBC southwest breakfast radio and Tali completely won over the presenter with him wanting to take her home at one point! Tali is one of the original dogs rescued by Pen Farthing from a desperate life on the streets surrounding the Royal Marines forward operating base in Helmand and is featured in the book 'One Dog at a Time' which you can puchase from the Nowzad online shop here
