Here at the Nowzad shelter and clinic we pride ourselves on being able to provide some of the best medical care currently available for animals in Afghanistan.
We employ 3 full time vets who have all completed 5 years at University in Kabul to complete their education and to ensure that they are kept up to date with modern medicine and techniques, several times a year guest vets volunteer their time to come to Kabul and work alongside our vets in the thick of it.
Special thanks must go out to Mayhew International who have very kindly been able to send Dr Mohammad to us twice over the last year. On Dr Mohammad’s last visit in February 2012 in just a week we were able to neuter/spay more than 25 animals. The experience that was gained by our vets and also by Louise is priceless and has enabled us to ensure that unless there is a valid medical reason not to, that all cats and dogs are neutered/spayed on arrival at the shelter. As well as this Dr Mohammad and our very own Dr Hadi were able to perform a much needed leg amputation for a cat as well as a dental surgery for another cat. Dr Mohammad laid a very solid foundation for Dr Hadi to be able to continue good practice in the Nowzad clinic and for him to be able to go on and train our new vets as we have employed them. Not only has Mayhew International provided us with valuable training time with Dr Mohammad but they have also provided Nowzad with incredible amounts of equipment that is not widely available in Afghanistan and this has allowed us to carry out more surgeries to the highest possible standard and save lives.
Nowzad will continue to work with Mayhew International in the future and help to bring education and experience to Afghan Vets.
A huge thank you also goes out to Dr Susan Chadima of Androscoggin Animal Hospital in Maine. Dr Chadima has just spent a whole month in Afghanistan working with our Nowzad vets to further their education. Particular cases to note are the cases of Blue Boy who came in with the worst case of Sarcoptic Mange we had ever seen and thanks to the dedication of Dr Chadima and the Nowzad vet team he made a full recovery and is now living in Canada. We also mustn’t forget Asal who was brought in after being run over. Asal made a full recovery but she also stole Dr Chadima’s heart and now lives in Maine with her. Dr Chadima and the Androcoggin Animal Hospital have provided Nowzad with much needed equipment and the experience she has brought to the clinic has saved many lives.
We hope to be host to Dr Chadima again towards the end of 2012 so we can continue with furthering the education of our Vet staff.
Without selfless medical professionals like Dr Mohammad and Dr Chadima and the support of Mayhew International and Androscoggin Animal Hospital we would not be able to provide the superb service for animals that the people and animals of Afghanistan have come to respect and admire!
