Chadima, who founded the Androscoggin Animal Hospital in 1985, will talk about her experiences at the Topsham Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15.

With her will be Pen Farthing, a former United Kingdom royal marine who founded Nowzad Dogs, a nonprofit organization that rescues stray and abandoned dogs, cats and donkeys in Afghanistan. The group rehabilitates those animals and locates them new homes in safe places around the globe.

The mighty mutt eventually met the US president who said later in a campaign video ‘It wasn’t until I knew that they were across the border, they were safe, everybody was accounted for including the dog, that, you know, i allowed some satisfaction.’

In 2006, while serving as a Royal Marine Commando in Helmand Province, Sergeant Pen Farthing encountered a battle just outside their operating base of Nowzad. It wasn’t a typical show of combat between men; this was a rough and brutal organised dog fight. Pen stepped in without hesitation to end the vicious display, completely unaware how this action would change his life.

Saved from the brutal bloodbath, one of the dogs, a mangy mongrel with a docked ear, immediately adopted Pen, faithfully following the Sergeant everywhere. They became best buddies and inseparable friends. So strong was their bond that Pen set in motion the necessary procedures to bring his new pal ‘Nowzad’ back home to the West Country of England. After saving one animal, Pen was determined to save more. And thus Nowzad Dogs, a not for profit charity, was born.

Goldie came into the Nowzad shelter in August 2011 along with her family of 10 pups and her husband, Beethoven. Nowzad had been taking care of the medical needs of the dogs whilst they lived on the base but then we received a call one night to say they could not stay on base and we needed to get the 12 strong family out!

We got them all to the shelter and one by one all of the pups found homes with Afghan families and in the West and Beethoven went off to a new life in America but Goldie remained with us.

In March 2012 Jim contacted us about adopting another dog to join Spin who we had already rescued from Afghanistan. We spoke to Jim and his family and established who would be a good match and in April 2012 Goldie got her lucky break and headed off to Colorado for a new life with Spin.

Goldie adores her new life and behaves like she always lived in America.

Following a successful mission in collaboration with Guardians of Rescue and SAC Fund to reunite a dog called Trigger with his owner, in March 2012 we once again partnered with Guardians of Rescue and SAC Fund to undertake what became known as ‘Op No Buddy Left Behind’

From time to time dogs arrive at the Nowzad shelter that have been cared for by soldiers but when it is time for the soldiers to leave they are unable to offer them permanent homes in the USA. The soldiers obviously do not want to leave their battle buddies behind to an unknown fate so they bring them to the Nowzad shelter and we work on finding them loving homes in the West.

After working hard we were able to identify 1o dogs that had been raised by soldiers and desperately needed homes in the West and at the end of April 2012 after much hard work we were able to transport all 10 animals to New York where they were met by Guardians of Rescue and taken to Hounds Town for some training in preparation for being re-homed with US Soldiers and Veterans.

The lucky dogs who were given this chance at a new life in America were Lucky, Sunshine, Vegas, Cinnamon, Socks, Blackie, Tony, Sonny, , Tommy and Pnut.
