Afghan Animals

AJ

Aj

AJ’s soldier contacted us in May 2011. His soldier was due to finish his tour in Afghanistan and wanted to send AJ home to Australia!

Being our first Australian request we first of all needed to get AJ to the safety of the shelter but then we had to work out the process to get him to the country with the toughest quarantine regulations in the world!

Lexi

Lexi

Nowzad was first contacted in March 2011 by Lexi’s soldier, Cpl David Day. He desperately wanted to send Lexi home to the USA so she could have the life she deserved. Sadly, Cpl Day was killed in action shortly after we first heard from him but we continued to work with his unit so that we could send Lexi home to his family.

Gunner

Gunner 1

Gunner’s Canadian Soldier contacted Nowzad in April 2011 to ask if we could help in sending him home to Canada. Of course we did not say not and we made plans for Gunner to be transported to the Nowzad shelter as quickly as we would from his base in Southern Afghanistan.

Gunner’s story in his soldiers own words is below

Bashira and Tundra

Bashira and Tundra

Bashira and Tundra arrived with us in March 2011 after a desperate email from 2 US soldiers serving in Southern Afghanistan. They had adopted these 2 gorgeous pups and time was running out to get them to safety so some frantic planning took place and late in March 2011 both pups arrived safely and in good health at the Nowzad shelter.

Nala

Nala came to the Nowzad shelter in April 2011 after a long tiring trip from Southern Afghanistan. Her story in her soldiers own words is below

“Nala came into our camp when one of our security guards witnessed her being kicked and rocks thrown at her, by local kids. The kids were told to go away and she was picked up and brought into our compound, where members of our camp aided to her recovery.

Pegasus (AKA SB Daisy)

n April 2011 Nowzad received a plea from the father of Pte Conrad Lewis who had been killed in action early in 2011. Conrad had told his family at Christmas 2010 he wanted to bring his dog called SB home with him when he finished his tour and now his father wanted to fulfil Conrad’s last wish

Rasta

Rasta came to the Nowzad Shelter in April 2011 after we had rescued Alice and Panshir for another soldier based in the same area and he had told Rasta’s owner about us. Rasta was a 6 month old giant of a dog and he let it be known he was there as soon as he arrived at the shelter.

Boss Dog

boss 001 (Small)

Boss Dog came to our attention in April 2011. He has been adopted as a young pup by a US soldier based in Southern Afghanistan. It was coming close to the time when his soldier would be heading home and he just could not bear to leave Boss Dog behind so Nowzad was contacted and we quickly managed to get him transported to the Nowzad Shelter.

Noodle

Noodle came to the Nowzad shelter in April 2011. Noodle had been given to her contractor owner by a high ranking Afghan Officer as a small sickly puppy and her contractor owner and her colleagues nursed Noodle back to full health. Policy on camp meant that once Noodle was fully grown as she definitely did not pass for one of the normal German Sherpard type working dogs around the camp! So, a plan was hatched to get this huge dog

Aries and Bear

Puppies learning to share

Aries and Bear’s owner got in touch with Nowzad in February 2011. He had got 2 gorgeous pups that he had saved from certain death and now he wanted to take them home to the USA and give them a good life.

Here is their owners story in his own words
