Afghan Animals

Ted and Peanut Butter

Ted and PEanut Butter

Ted and Peanut Butter were adopted by an American soldier in Southern Afghanistan early in 2011. In May 2011 we received a request for help in getting these 2 adorable cats home to America.

Nowzad worked closely with the soldier and various interpreters until we were able to come up with a plan to get them to the shelter safely and by the end of May 11 they were safely at the shelter and were given a clean bill of health.

Charlotte AKA Charlie

Charlotte 3

Charlotte arrived at the Nowzad shelter in April 2011, his story in his soldiers own words is below

“Charlotte AKA Charlie was found as a kitten during a mission on route Charlotte. He was alone at the time and not wanting her to get run over by the convoy we picked him up. He was probably only a few months old and curled up inside a helmet on the ride back to base. On the compound he quickly became a part of the small team. Everyone helped to take care of him between taking milk, tuna and chicken from the dining hall to having family mail cat shampoo and toys. He’s always been great at relieving stress after long days on operations and has really become part of the family that guys grow to depend on during deployments.

Gordita

Gordita 1

Gordita was taken in by her soldier when she was no more than a tiny ball of fluff. She was swapped for 3 parachutes at a time when her soldiers unit has suffered the loss of 3 soldiers and she was a very much welcomed pup who helped the soldiers from the unit through this bad time.

From day one the small bundle of fluff had a massive attitude and she quickly started to follow her soldier out on patrol to protect him from the dangers of dangerous donkeys and kids!

JK

Afghanistan 2010 005 (1024x768)

We first heard from JK’s soldier back in Feb 2011 when he was looking to rescue a young pup called Cartman. Sadly, Cartman got sick and we were unable to get to him in time to save him and he passed away. The, in April 2011 we received another email from Cartman’s soldier telling us about an adult female dog he had befriended who was called Jani Khail or JK for short. JK and her soldier had become very close since the loss of Cartman and her soldier wanted to give her the chance that Cartman never had.

Reggie

Reggie

Reggie arrived at the Nowzad shelter in June 2011 shortly after his soldier had already left Afghan and was back in the USA. With some careful planning and co-ordination with an interpreter we were able to get Reggie safely transported to the shelter where she stayed until it was time for him to go home and join her soldier.

Primus

Primus 3

Primus was adopted by a soldier in Western Afghanistan. He arrived at the Nowzad shelter in July 2011. His story in his soldier own words is below

“Primus was dropped off/discarded close to our front gate about 45 days priorto my arrival in Afghanistan. Initially he was given to a Slovenian by an ANP Officer who found him and new that one of the guys wanted a puppy.

Zeus

Zeus at ECP5

Zeus came to the Nowzad shelter shortly after his brother, Saber in May 2011. Zeus and Saber were born on 6 Jan 11 in Southern Afghanistan and both of them were lucky enough to find contractors who loved them and were willing to give them loving homes in the USA.

Saber

Saber

Saber’s owner contacted us in May 2011 to request help in sending him home to the USA. Saber had been born in Southern Afghanistan and was around 5 months old and was a huge puppy getting ready to become a huge adult dog!

Saber arrived with us in good health and was soon joined by his brother, Zeus who had been rescued by another contractor in the same area.

Delta

Delta

Delta and her litter of 6 puppies first arrived at the Nowzad shelter back in March 2011. We had received a desperate plea from the soldier who found them to get them to the shelter and then on to the USA.

When they arrived the puppies were only about 8 weeks old and far too young to travel to the USA but we quickly set about fundraising so we could get Delta home and have the funds waiting for her puppies when they were old enough.

Wylie

Wylie

Wylie came to our attention shortly after AJ. Wylie was also taken in by Australian soldiers who wanted to take him home.

Wylie had a very bad start in life and when he was found he had suffered some very bad injuries but his soldiers persevered and nursed him back to health and soon he was well enough to be transported to the Nowzad shelter.
